How to Prepare for UK University Interviews

For many top universities and competitive courses like medicine or law, an interview is a key part of the selection process. Preparation is everything. Here’s a breakdown of how to get ready.
1. Re-read Your Personal Statement
The interviewers will have your personal statement in front of them. Be prepared to discuss anything you mentioned in it, from books you’ve read to work experience you’ve undertaken. Be ready to expand on your points with enthusiasm and depth.
2. Know Your Subject Inside and Out
This is the most important part. The interview is designed to test your passion and aptitude for the subject. Read beyond your school curriculum. Follow the latest news and developments in your field. Be ready to discuss your opinions on complex topics and show that you are a critical thinker.
3. Practice Common Questions
While you can't predict every question, you can practice your responses to common ones:
- "Why do you want to study this course?"
- "Why did you choose this university?"
- "What are your career aspirations?"
- "Tell us about a book you've read related to your subject."
Practice answering these out loud to yourself, a friend, or a family member. The goal isn't to memorize answers, but to get comfortable articulating your thoughts.
4. Prepare Your Own Questions
At the end of the interview, you'll almost always be asked if you have any questions. Having one or two thoughtful questions prepared shows your engagement. Ask about a specific research area, a module, or an opportunity at the university. Avoid asking things you could easily find online.
